Shah Jahan Mosque

Woking

The Shah Jehan Mosque was built in 1889 and is the oldest purpose built one in Britain and Northern Europe. Surprisingly, it was not designed by a Muslim, and both this and the long gone Oriental Institute were the brainchild of a Hungarian, Gottlieb Leitner who was actually born to Jewish parents.

It is now a Grade II listed building and superbly maintained.

Lots of surprising things here, included the irony of history related to your explanation ;-)
