Woking
A return to the Railway Electrical Control room after three years as part of the Heritage Weekend openings. It was built around 1937 by the Southern Railway to manage the power distribution throughout the local railways.
Its introduction coincided with the electrification of the line between Woking and Portsmouth.
When you hear of stories where they have to turn the power off because of an idiot is walking along the line, this is the place they would have flicked the switch. Up until 1997 anyway, as since then the task has been transferred to Eastleigh, near Southampton.
