Lucca and its famous piazza, day 1. We visited Lucca for 3 days after a few days in Volterra. As usual, I had an interest in the tourist experience, where most sane people will clone other tourists out -- but I like that we're all enjoying being there. The Church of St. Michael in Forum, or Chiesa San Michele in Foro, is quite a sight. Even with my litle Elph s410, I was unable to get far enough back to get the full church. It was built around the 12th century on top of the site of an old Roman forum. Photos here show the archangel Michael at the top, between two musical angels. Apparently Saint Michael's wings are moveable, and on extremely windy days can be retracted. Puccini was a choir boy at this church, and we enjoyed a Puccini concert the first night. After that is the even larger Cathedral of San Martino, also known as The Lucca Cathedral, noted for its Volto Santo di Lucca or "Holy Face" of a large wooden body of a crucifix with quite a legend. Photos weren't allowed; it had a very beautiful, sad and dark face I hoped to keep a memento of, but my camera, through the marble enclosure, got only the body. Still, it gives the atmosphere, so I've included it. In response to a request, here are other Internet images of the Volto Santo of Lucca. |
