Rome photos - Day One

We arrived in Rome after 4pm, with cab to our hotel, Albergo Romano, near the Colosseum, where we sat across the street at the train station and passed some time from about 6pm to 8pm and then went to find dinner.

Guest/Gloria - there are controls on the top-right of your camera to use the zoom lens, in
increments. Do look that up in the book. (The infinity setting is normally for focusing.)
Here's a good guide for you on your camera - use top-center choice-box to go to other

You've a great camera. Practice with it before going on your trip and you'll be fine!

Thank you Andrys, the 4 x zoom that you are talking about is that the infinity setting? I use that at times, sometimes blurry, sometimes not but it's a great camera! I can't wait to get on the plane and go to all these beautiful places in your pictures, hopefully there won't be long waiting lines for the museums.

Gloria, your SD800 IS does have an almost 4-times zoom, which you use a lever to shoot
at settings between normal wider range and increasingly close-up ones.
If you're not sure how to use the settings, I'd just leave it on either "Auto" or on
"Program" (with the latter you yourself set the ISO (higher for low-light, but more grainy
when it's higher). Learn how to activate that zoom lens though!
    The auto will be best as you can just aim and shoot. If you focus on
something across the street (usually by pressing the shutter release half-way down to
set the focus and exposure), the camera will take care of it. And if you don't want to think
about that either, just plain auto-mode will tend to do. Have a great time in Tuscany !

Wonderful & beautiful pictures, we are heading to Italy end of May, 3 days in Rome, the rest in a small cottage just outside Montalcino. Will take day trips to Florence by train and drive around countryside of Tuscany. I have an SD800is, what is the best setting to keep it on for shots I don't have time to change? I take ok pictures, don't have a zoom unfortunately but I have an infinity setting, does that work ok for shots across the street.

Glad you enjoyed these! I had a small Canon Powershot Elph s410 in my purse for
everyday use and the Canon Rebel XT with 70-300mm telephoto lens, which I was just
learning how to use. I liked this arrangement, as I didn't have to change lenses. I know
you will have a great time. May is just about the perfect time to go, weather wise.
