Coast Guard Recruit Training Center, Cape May, NJ

I gained 25 pounds (130 to 155) eating here during recruit training in June-July-August 1966. After my 49 months of active duty I went back to see this horrible place while on a seven-week road trip around the country.

Update August 2011: the barracks in the background and the gallery on the right are long gone and replaced with a grass field and a nice monument to Douglas Munro, the only Coast Guard recipient of the Medal of Honor.

I went through the USCG RTC March, April, May 1954 CO. I - 20 --- Company Commander was Chief Bosunmate Bart. I sure don't remember the place looking like this. I went on to duty stations in Chicago, Memphis, Korea & back to Chicago. I attained the rank of BM 2 & was discharged in 1958

There is a correction to my prior Comment. The Cape May Coast Guard Recruit Training Center is still in use. After I revisited the Cape May Training Center, I drove to see the old Coast Guard base in Groton, Connecticut, where I had been stationed after boot camp. It was no longer in use, but was a marine observatory station.

A few years ago, I, too, went back to see the Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, but it was no longer used for that purpose, but it was now some sort of a marine observatory station. In July 1957, when I was 18 years of age, I was trained there in Company R-16, and ultimately obtained the rank of Yeoman 2nd Class in the Coast Guard Reserves. I received my Honorable Discharge in 1965. Since 1963, I have practiced law in Miami-Dade County, Florida, and am now 68 years young.
