Flight deck of Antonov AN-225

Sarajevo airport

The UN hired the world's biggest plane, an Antonov 225, to fly freight into Sarajevo. When it arrived I walked out onto the tarmac to shoot some photos and I ran into the crew. One of them invited me to tour the plane, of which he was obviously quite proud. I started shooting pictures on the flight deck and I heard somebody whisper behind me, "There's military secrets up there!" The co-pilot, the one who was showing me around, shot back "Secret from who?!"

other sizes: small medium original auto

The real workhorse of the war was the C130 Hercules.

This plane is "Antonov 225" or "Mriya", not "AntonOFF".
Some people call it, by mistake "Antonov 224".
This plane was based on Antonov's earlier An-124 or "Ruslan"
It has nothing to do with any foreign designers or Russian immigrants.
Produced in the USSR in Ukraine near Kiev, now in Ulyanovsk, Russia.
A lot of information for this plane on Internet.
But, the real "workhorses" of that war in Sarajevo were IL-76 (Il'yushin design bureau).
I flew, working as flight coordinator for Red Cross, to Sarajevo intensively from Zagreb, carrying humanitarian aid during 1994-95.
I've made more than 100 landings in Sarajevo.
