On Friday, May 9, a hunting guide dropped off his passenger and taxied along the ice in front of Kotzebue looking for a safe place to pull into the shore. The ice was getting soft from warm temperatures and rain and the plane's skiis went thru. The pilot was able to get out. A crowd soon gathered, many of them also pilots, and the rescue of the plane was underway.
