FILM NOIR! This is like a shot of Bogart in Casablanca. The scene starts with Bogie talking with his eyes in shadow like this. After a couple sentences, he steps forward into the light.
They also used a lot of this kind of light in The Score (2001) with Marlon Brando, Edward Norton and Robert Deniro.
