Growing in the gardens of the collection of cottages along with a yellow variety. These strangely named plants are members of the genus Eremophila, which means 'desert-loving'. They are found in semi-arid areas where the climate is harsh and plant variety is generally limited. The seeds are very hard and it is said that they have to pass through an emu's digestive system before they will germinate, giving rise to their common name.
