Destroyed by an earthquake in 1854, Kakegawa castle was left in ruins until local citizens helped raise money for its reconstruction in the early 1990s. Finished in 1993, it was the first castle in Japan to be completely rebuilt using original techniques and materials (rather than ferro-concrete).
