Along the historic Tōkaidō road where Chūbu's Aichi and Shizuoka prefectures meet, these three former castle towns are part of Japan's extended industrial heartland between Tōkyō and Nagoya. Kakegawa is the smallest and most immediately accessible for tourists, with a fully-wooden, reconstructed castle. Hamamatsu is best known as the home of Yamaha, Roland and Suzuki and is the largest city in Shizuoka-ken. Toyohashi, with its celebrated streetcars and large resident foreign population, is a major rail hub and port for automobile imports and exports, as well as the access point for nearby Toyokawa, home to the head Buddhist temple for Inari worship in Japan.
