American Fried Rice at Thai Airways Restaurant Bangkok Airport DSC_1031.jpg

Such a dish exists in Thailand! I would consider it a traditional Thai dish as it's been around for decades and is everywhere. It's typically rice fried in American Ketchup or tomato sauce, sometimes mixed with raisins, usually served with a fried egg, hot dog, fried chicken, ham, and croutons! This relatively expensive version at the airport seems to have all the ingredients except the raisins. The contents of the bottle next to the salt and pepper shakers is also interesting -- it's Heinz' hot sauce! Did you know that Heinz made such a product? The fact that its label is in Thai means that it's meant for clients who read Thai -- which is something considering that there seems to be signs in English (sometimes in "Thai English"!) everywhere.

When I looked at it just now I even thought it was. But it was actually not - it was a fried egg!!!!!

American Fried rice absolutely NEEDS to have raisins in it! And mushy peas. Other things are optional, such as pineapple, bits of bacon and so on. I'd like to think of "American Fried Rice" as the Thai definition of "American Breakfast" (eggs, ham, sausage etc) however with the toast replaced by rice. It also absolutely NEEDS to be served with more ketchup and Maggi seasoning. :) Carry on. :)
