Feb 3: Snowed

The snow arrived with a bang first thing this morning. Literally. Nothing like a sudden clap of thunder to wake you up at 6AM! later I went out to the beehive to make sure they weren't sealed in with snow. Not that they'd be out flying in this cold. I've no idea if the snow on the roof is good or bad. The entrance was clear but right now all we can do is hope that we still have a living colony in there. We'll know pretty soon. When we have the first warm spring day.

I understand their bodies in the hive act as their own central heating system by clustering together and creating body warmth by shivering. Or that's what a bee keeping father of a friend told me. Here they seem to survive in temps as low as -20 outside. In Cornwall's mild temperatures they should be fine.

Eskimo's lived in igloo's at one time, the snow should be an insulator, hope so.

Don't know the first thing about bees but if they're inside in the relative warm, I hope they'll be OK.
