Red Bull Air Races

Detroit/Windsor

The Red Bull Air Races are taking place this weekend 13-14 June on the Detroit River between
Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan. We went down on a beautiful sunny Friday to
watch the planes practicing. The river was a wonderful shade of turquoise and there
was great atmosphere and lots of excitement in the city as the Detroit Redwings were
playing game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals in the evening – sadly they lost…
I was pleased to be able to capture this fast moving plane as it flew through
one of the gates on the course. I particularly wanted to capture it in Portrait mode,
which was quite a challenge, handholding the big camera. Thank you Sayer for letting
me use his 1D when the battery on my 40D started to die!
I hope you don’t find the background distracting, I quite like the way it shows just
how close to the city the planes are flying.

I think the background is perfect for this excellent shot, Tricia. Also, I now see where Sayer was standing to get his shot.....on top of one of those cones!

Well timed, Tricia. I'll bet shooting these is about as frustrating as doing hummingbirds or water drops. (Lots of misses)

Nice timing, Tricia! The portrait mode really enhances the scale of things.

Perfectly timed... and well worth the effort to get this portrait shot.

Blimey and there I was thinking the air-ways were free of traffic cones ;-)

Lots of interesting element to this, the plane is well placed and surprisingly the background really does not distract. Good shot...

Wonderful capture, I agree about the background, adds to the "story". Kathie

Very well captured Trica. This is the kind of event I love to try and photograph.
