Snowberry Clearwing Moth larva (Hemaris diffinis)

Austin, Texas

This caterpillar was about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches long and was one of a small army of at least two dozen of the little monsters to invade my poor beleaguered Goldflame honeysuckle vine late this summer. The vine had had a bad year - lots of powdery mildew from the unusually wet summer - and didn't have a whole lot of leaves to spare for all these little eating machines. I picked off all but one or two of the biggest ones. They looked like they were pretty fully grown and hopefully wouldn't cause too much more damage to the plant. I have seen the adults where I work (about a mile away) - fascinating creatures.
