I was on the USS General D.I. Sultan that left the Port of Oakland October 1, 1966 and sailed under the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. I remember standing on the Fan Tail of this ship looking at Ocean Beach and thinking that 5 years earlier I was running along that beach at 15yrs Old living on 42nd and Judah St with my grandparents.
I was with 3rd Bridge Company at that time. We were at sea for 22days when we did a beach landing on October 22nd 1966.
I remember there were 1700 Army and 200 Marines on that ship. I remember having my head shaved after crossing the International Date Line. I received a card about being a member of something of the sea which I lost but would like to find again if anyone remembers the card we were given after crossing the International dateline.

Woaw, Tom! I can see what You mean, the difference between Your Pic and mine. The earliest I was there was 1976 for the Bicentennial.
