In 1966 I served in Vietnam with the US Army. This gallery contains some photos of that time. The quality in many cases is not what I would like ... but c'est la vie, c'est la guerre. Where it makes sense, I've explained each photo.

Thanks so much sharing your photos of Vietnam. I served there in 66-67, 716th MP BN. I saw the DMZ and Cambodian border many times on patrol and escorting convoys. Brought back lots of memories.

Bobby Joslin. Were with you 95th MP battalion headquarters. Enjoyed looking at the old pictures. Went to the orphanages many times. I remember most of the pictures and the USS up shore. 28 days also. We came out of Fort Riley, Kansas.

I was stationed at Xi An, 20 miles northeast of Saigon, with the 1st Infantry Division from Oct. 20, 1965, to May 22, 1966. Your photos sure bring back a lot of memories -- especially the ones from Saigon, which I got to visit a number of times when helping to deliver the hometown news releases about the 1st Division, as a member of the PIO in Headquarters Co. I did get sent out to the jungle a few times to gather stories about the individual GIs. No actual combat, but I got shot at by snipers a couple of times. Thanks for your service, fellow NamVets!

I was stationed at Na Bay in 1966-67 with the 188th Military Police Bat. We patrolled the river in the boat with the blunt bow. The 'swift boats' were used by the Navy Seals to patrol the river farther South. I salvaged some brass items from that sunken ship.

I was stationed at Na Bay with the 188 Military Police Betalion during the time these pictures were taken. Some of your info on MP boats are wrong. The 'swift boats' were used by the Navy Seal unit to patrol the river. I was on that sunken ship and took some brass items from the forward locker at the bow. The 36 foot patrol boat was used by us to patrol the river.

Great pictures. My base camp was at Phuoc-Vinh. I was there from December 1965 through January 1967 my unit was the 1st Div. (Big Red 1 ) I carried a M-60 and was in the security platoon attached to HHC. Hard to beleave but I liked it

GUEST Hi Tom: I was stationed at Di An in 1970, HHT 3/17 air cav., What I remember best about the Saigon Zoo was that poor elephant chained up with about 10 feet of room. I often told folks about the Catholic Orphanage and how they would coordinate the kids using flags. The children were very well behaved.

I was assigned to the 506th Field Depot in Nah Bey just outside of Saigon in July 1967 through July 1968. My living quarters were located in the Meyercord Hotel in Cholon Vietnam, the Chinese Sector of Saigon. The 506th Field Depot was reorganized into the Long Binh Army Depot in 1968. I am familiar with many of the sites that your pictures depict. When I first came into country I was living at the Rex Hotel for further assignment. I then moved to the Meyercord Hotel in Cholon the Chinese Sector of Saigon. I was there during the Tet Offensive and the Mini Tet Offensive in May of 1968. During the summer of 1968 I was further assigned to the Long Binh Army Depot until I was discharged in March of 1969 in country to do specialized work with Pacific Architecs and Engineers. My name is Phil Engle and I was also in and around Saigon from May 1966-May, 1967 (45th.M.I. Co., 519th. M.I. Bn.) and served with Jay Leno's older brother, Pat (still have a picture of him from a restaurant we ate at in Cholon). I am going back next April and appreciate the old photos, especially since I have seen some of the same places in recent photos.

Tom, Thanks for the pictures. I was with the 300th from 2/67 - 10/67 when I was rotated out to the 9th MP in Bear Cat. I fondly remember "all work and no play" If you remember Lurch Moncrief, he said to watch out for floters coming down the river. Never did see one but had a great time. It was a nice break from the regular grind.

Chao, Toi la My. (I am American). My wife is VN. I was US Marine 65-67, 69-70 in I Corps from Chu Lai to DMZ. first arrived after crossing the ocean on board ship.Saigon da blum, Saigon dep, Saigon Oi. (Saigon is beautiful). I can see why the north wanted the prize of Saigon and the garden of Eden in south west VN. we went back in early 1990's (not many Americans around then) and we go back now almost every year. Gia dinh (family lives in Ba Ria near Bu Dien (post office). when leaving on the freedom bird in late 1970, I had mixed feelings about leaving part of my heart and soul behind. roy (big al).

Great pictures Tom - happens that I was on the Eastern Mariner wreck in June 1966 and made several dives around the hull. We recovered (scrounged) the radar, SSB, charts, and a lot of other misc stuff. We had a Boston Whaler with 4 guys and all the "recovered items" just about sunk the whaler on the return to Saigon. I have no pictures and would like to copy yours for my album. I have a lot of other photos of VN dating May 66 - mid 69 but still on slides and still coping to digital. I live in Singapore and have made dozens of trips to VN since 1992. Many thanks

Hi, I was in Vietnam with the Hollywood USO in the Jack Costanzo Show in August of 1967. Returned for a second tour October 1967 with my own Josie Powell Show. It was quite an experience of which I'm grateful for. To experience first hand the horrors of the war, to see our boys, so brave, changed my life forever. Thank you for putting up the pictures. We visited a city under siege, went to the commissary at the Rex a week after it was bombed. Had tea at the Continetal Hotel, had lunch at a country club half destroyed. Had dinner at a one time five star restaurant with only four things on the menu. Did shows at many installations outside the city. Saw the countryside in ruins. If anyone was there during those months I would love to know if they saw our show.

I was in Vietnam 1965-1966 and trying to remember what the MP units I was with, in Soc Trane we did door gunners on the egg beatters, andalso was in Vung Tau and last but not least at the air base in Saigon.

Did anyone out there know Capt. Isaiah "Ike" James, Jr., from Florida? I think he was "in country" in 1965-67 [age 24-26]. I met him in Heidelberg in mid-67, where we were together until 09/68, when I returned to States. Ike didn't talk much about Nam in those days. He died in 2000, aged 59, of complications from sarcoidosis, linked to chemicals used to make weapons for Nam. Would like to hear your memories of a fine soldier. Thanks. These photos of Saigon brought back memories of what a strange and beautiful city he thought it was.

Maori Child Soldiers Can anyone tell me anything you know about 12 year old and older boys taken from New Zealand, against their will, to serve British Units in Vietnam? I have a friend who's life and many other cousins and villagers lives were destroyed this way. They did not volunteer, didn't know where they were, were used like slaves and had to find their own way home. Of course, they have no benefits. Of his group only 6 survived and my friend had sever PTSD. I cannot find acknowledgement of this in any documents. Maybe someone knows a British veteran who knows something of this.

Hello. I am trying to help Airman Glenn R. Huffaker get some much needed benefits from the VA. So far, all I have heard is that "records were burned in a fire". He was in the 67 FTR TAC SQ in Okinawa before he was sent to Kurat, Thailand in 1966-1967 with the renewed activated 13 TAC FTR SQ. He enlisted in the USAF 7 May 1963 and was discharged 30 Apr 1967. He was an Aircraft Maintenance Specialist. He was released from active duty at Travis AFB, Fairfield, Calif. with an honorable discharge and I feel that it is imperative that he get some VA benefits now when needed. The local Vet Administration are trying to help but they also are told that "Airman Huffaker has no records to be found to prove his service in Korat, Thailand" Can ANYONE assist me in what I can do next, to at least find some records that will prove his service in Korat. His DD-214 doesn't tell of it , or at least the one that he received. I would also like to add that I have enjoyed this site very much and the photos are awesome. It makes one realize what our American soldiers went thru while deployed.

I served March 1966-February 1967, stationed in Saigon, traveled throughout the country trying and defending general courts martial. On my first visit back to Saigon in 2005, I went to the Rex, scene of great times on the roof with my comrades. There was a sign in the entrance which told me the war was really over. "Welcome to the ____ class of the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College".

My brother was killed near Di An on November 1, 1966 the Big Red One. His name was Mickey Pugh. He received a Bronze Star for his heroism on the day he died. If anyone was with him or knew him please let me know. His Curious Sister (by the way he was severely injured and had spent 53 days in hospital with his teeth wired together. He was killed 2 days after getting out of hospital.

I was stationed at the JOD COC5 from June 1966 until June 1967, I was in the building directly across for Gen Cao Van Viens office building. My CO was Col Edwin C Gibson. There were 3 QC that were at the door, there names were Bui Li Hi, Khanh, Manh and Bien, have been trying to locate them for years. Bui was married and had a couple of children. These pictures brought back some forgotten memories. Thank You So Much for them, I took around 15000 slides and when I got back to the states I lost them all in a fire. So I dont have anypictures of mine.

I was in Saigon from Dec 66 to Dec 67 and Jun 68 to Jun 69. I was with the JOD COC5 located in the JGS Compound across from the 3rd Field Hospital, Do you know anyone who has pictures of this compound. In Jun 68 I was assigned to the 69th Signal Battalion as the Special Orders Clerk. CWO2 Barry D Farris was the Adjutant then. Really enjoyed both years. Would like to go back but don't know when. I was lucky enough to be able to live "on the economy," e.g. in rented quarters, rather than in one of the BOQs (military housing for officers). These are extremely valuable. Times in Asia, I would imagine, were quite different than now. I can only go back to 1979 to draw comparisons, and that was Taiwan and Korea, not Vietnam. Great that you were able to maintain them through the decades. It seems that some are neg/slide scans. Fantastic.

I was in Saigon on R&R from the First Cav in 65 when Ia Drang Valley occurred. Since I was with First Cav I had to stick around while new arrivals got a change of MOS and immed sent to the 1st Cav at An Khe Then again when I left in May 66

During an army combat art tour in Aug-Sep '68, I spent time with an outfit patroling the rivers around Saigon. Unfortunately, it's been 44 years and my photos, sketches and notes are lost. To the best of my recollection the outfit was headquarted on Route 1 just north of Saigon and close to the highway. During my few days with them, they were patroling in small open boats with outboards. Misssion was looking for and clearing possibly booby trapped floating debris. I'm currently working on a series of paintings covering the years of '65-'68 and I would like to include a painting on this type of duty. I don't think these guys got all the attention they deserved. Served in HHC 2/28th . The whole year of 1966. I also have about 600 pictures that I took while in Nam. There was good and bad time but I remember most of the bad. You have a great collection of pics. Thanks for sharing

Boy, does this bring back difficult memories... Congrats and thanks for posting the pics and notes. I'm having trouble understanding how you spent so much time in Saigon as part of 1st Inf Div. Perhaps it was because you were tasked to patrol the Mekong delta. I was a writer with 1st Admin Co in Di An in 1966, and whenever we moved from the base it was to go north. For me, Saigon was like an eternity away!

Tom, the pic captioned The Brinks Hotel was the American Embassy on Ham Nghi Blvd...It became the Embassy Annex when the new embassy on Thong Nhut opened in Sep 1967...This old embassy was carbombed in 1965.

I just happened upon your pictures and they really brought back a lot of memories. I was with HQ with the 716th MP Bn from 1/66 - 1/67. The hotel you have pictures of was the Victoria and it was bombed on 4/1/66. Three MP's were killed that morning. Great pictures!! I would love to return to visit Saigon someday! I loved the city, the country and the people.

I certainly enjoyed viewing these pictures for they reminded me of my own tour of duty in 1965-66 with the 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) in Di An, Vietnam. I would love to go back one day, but at the age of sixty-five, I have almost given up on that dream ever becoming a reality. I have a lot of pictures of my own--ones from Di An, Saigon, Bien Hoa, and other places visited while stationed there--however, most of them are in black and white. I have also written and published a memoir entitled "River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood." Chapter 13 of this book is entitled, "Deliverance," which is about my days in Vietnam. Tom, Thanks for the photos, they're terrific. I was in the Saigon/Vung Tau area in early 1966 too as an 18 year old Merchant Marine sailing out of Oakland, CA. I was also an Army medic from 1968-70 and served 18 months in a Vietnam evac hospital. I've been looking for information on Operation Crimp and some of the fighting in Saigon in early February '66. We were regularly rocketed coming up and down the Tong Channel as a merchant vessel and expected that but when we were docked at Cholon we encountered several nights of street fighting and setting of house fires in Cholon between what looked like plain clothes and uniformed MPs both US and Vietnamese. Do you have any info on Crimp or this street fighting or pre-9th Army delta activity on the merchant ships in the channel? Also, there was constant fighting around a fuel dump called Nga Bay I think...any info there? Finally, the public execution site you shot, where was that and do you remember another one at the center of a large rond-point near the center of town? I recall one that was near the entrance to a large park or public residence. Just curious. Thanks again for the great photos, docgannon

Tom, Great photos! I was transfered to the 300th for "rotation purposes" (actually I threatened to kill my platoon sgt) in March '67. I came from the 552d the Corps Police for IIFFV. Your pics sure remind me of my time with the 300th. For some reason I have misplaced many of my pics from that time. After making sergeant I was convoy escort commander out of Newport but Oh, the memories you brought back to mind.

Great shots and they brought back a lot of memories. Wonderful color as well. I have about 200 slides of 1967-68 of Siagon and Gia Dinh Province. I was with MACV Adv TM 100 and Tm 44. First tour was spent on the beach near Phu Bai and last tour in Da Nang but my pictures can't compare with your's. Great job and thanks for the memories.

I HAVE SEVERAL PICTURES THAT I HAD TAKEN WHILE THERE BUT THE ONE I REALLY REMEMBER IS ONE OF A LITTLE GIRL THAT I WOULD SEE WHILE ON PATROL IN DI AN. HER FATHER WAS KILLED BY THE VC AND HER MOTHER HAD A VERY HARD TIME GETTING BY. WE ( ALL THE MP'S THAT PATROLED THIS AREA WOULD HELP OUT IN ANY WAY WE COULD) FAMILY FRIENDS HAD SENT A DRESS TO MY YOUNG DAUGHTER WHILE I WAS IN GERMANY BUT IT NEVER GOT TO ME UNTIL I ARRIVED IN VN. I GAVE THAT LITTLE DRESS TO THIS LADY AND WILL NEVER FORGET THE LOOK ON HER FACE AND THAT YOUNG GIRLS FACE TO SEE THAT DRESS.

The heart skips a beat as one looks at these images, especially if they are viewed as a slideshow: we join the journey of a young soldier, off to battle in an unpopular war. He is met by orphans whose smiles hint not at innocence lost. The scene moves into the city and we witness the humdrum routines of ordinary lives. Then the scene shifts again and now comes images of destruction and the shockingly absurd banality of combat. It then ends with the collapse of a warship. Cimino and Coppola have given us images of war burnished with Wagnerian splendour, as if the photographic accounts of those times were not dramatic enough. This gallery, on the other hand, is almost naive in comparison but there lies its greatness. It is a documentary of a unique, personal experience about a war which almost everybody wants to forget. The sixty four pictures are presented with steadfast directness and lack of affectation. But remarkably, one witnesses a journey as poignant as that of Paul Bäumer's (the main character in Remarque's "All Quiet in the Western Front"). In the film version, Bäumer is shown killed while reaching for a butterfly and one is left speechless. This awesome gallery has similar qualities: one is left speechless and the heart skips a beat.

Terrific gallery. My father was in Saigon for the Tet Offensive. Previous to his service there he was an adviser to the Thai Army and our whole family lived in Bangkok. When he got his command in Vietnam, we flew home on a charter through Saigon when I was 4 year old. I also visited Saigon a few years ago and your pictures look like my vacation photos, minus the uniforms (and the floor show). Compared to my Dad's home movies from Saigon in 68, the biggest difference seemed to be less auto traffic now than when the Americans were there. Thanks for the photos!

I stumbled across this site by accident. I was an officer in the Corps of Engineers from Oct 1966 to Oct 1967. I was stationed in the Delta in Bear Cat, Long Bin, and Vung Tau. I was lucky and returned home. Thanks for posting your pictures.

I really like this gallery and your work. I think you've really captured the juxtapositions that existed in Vietnam and especially in Saigon, with thriving commerce and happiness on one side and the terrible pressures of war on the other. Really excellent work and amazing presentation. Nice job!

PFC Charles Stevens, 605th Trans Co. Phu Loi 1966-1967. Thanks for the pictures. I was a replacement for the guys who came over on the boat and set up the 605th. I think about Viet Nam a lot because of the war in Iraq.

Tom, great shots. It brings back lots of memories. My dad was in Da Nang in 64 and in Sigon in 66. Died of Agent Orange in 91. The closest I could get was Karat RTAFB in Thailand. I was there to help evac. Viet Nam 74-75. Some of your photos look a lot like mine. Thanks for sharing. "V"
