Saigon Traffic

If you weren't there, you can't appreciate this scene. If you WERE there, this shot should bring back the noise, the fumes, the chaos associated with Saigon traffic.

Yeah, this is authentic. I was there the summer of 1966 with Navy Patrol Squadron Two at Ton Son Nhut and billeted at the Hardy BOQ.

Motor Bikes there today by the thousands. Five on a Honda 250 with mom, dad two kids and a baby. My Vietnamese wife holds my hand and says don't look and follow me when we cross a street in Saigon. There is now a McDonalds in District #1 near BinhTahn Mkt. There is something about Saigon smells, memories and the people that still draws me there. Served 64-68 USN.

I was there from Oct. 66 to Oct. 67 with the 720th M.P. Battalion. One of our jobs was providing security for convoys traveling out of Long Binh to Cu Chi and Tay Ninh and back. We really added to the congestion going through Saigon.

I remember. I was there but not until 2005. This looks very similar to what it did when I was there with all the scooters, rickshaws and bicycles and extremely crowded streets. Also the air was thick with exhaust so everyone wore face masks). It was really scary just trying to CROSS the street, requiring the courage and skill took nearly the entire trip for me to master. Yes I remember all that chaos of Saigon traffic!

I can smell the fumes from the little scooters, congested traffic, and risking your life while crossing the street with few crosswalk...love it and tons of memories from my visit. Great image Tom. vv
