German & Italian Troops, World War II

Germany

... this photo showing both German and Italian troops during WWII was taken at Hindenburg Kaserne in Kornwestheim, Germany (a suburb now of Stuttgart). After the war, the US Army took this Kaserne over and renamed it Wilkin Barracks. The photo location is the motor pool area. This Kaserne was the home of the 385th Military Police Battalion for several decades until it was torn down sometime around 2001 or so. It is now a major new shopping center. C'est la vie ... C'est la guerre ...

I was there at HHC 2/4 Infantry from !976-1978. I worked security at the gate plus I was 63bravo and worked down at the motor pool when we were not on manuever in Wild Flicken or other sites. One of my Company Commanders was Capt Buckley, Capt Fitchgerald and some other black guy I forgot his name. The food was great. I have a son living there with his mother over in Freiberg, Stuttgart or Zuffenhausen. I lived off base in Bad Cannstatt for awhile. Calvin Scott was one of my best friends there. Morales, Big Dee etc....

I was stationed at Wilkin barracks from 1984 to 1986 with the 385th MP Bn. I always wondered about what happened there during World War 2. Do you know where I can find more information on its history.

Correction March 11, 2012 entry... as follows: It should have read "651st Medical Company", rather than "351st Medical Battalion". After reviewing my old pictures taken some 58 years ago I was able to read our company sign outside our building.

Was stationed March through October of 1954 in Wilkin with (as best I can remember) the 351st Medical Battalion, and we kept our ambulances in that same motor pool building. Also there was a Transportation Battalion stationed in Wilkin at that time.

It is hard to believe I had spent many long hours at the same motor pool that both Nazi's used. I did not know there was so much history there.

A real piece of history. I think I'd rather have the shopping center on balance.
