I received news yesterday that a friend from work lost his baby daughter.
He and his wife were out of the country on vacation, the girl was in the care of grandparents and there was a freak accident.
His daughter was the apple of his eye, he was so proud of her. They had just celebrated her first birthday.

At work, she was our child by default. We all talked of her like she was our own blood, our own niece.

I can't imagine the horror. I can't imagine the grief, the guilt.
