AKA: Common blackbird
The males live up to their name but, confusingly, females are brown often with spots and streaks on their breasts. The bright orange-yellow beak and eye-ring make adult male blackbirds one of the most striking garden birds. One of the commonest UK birds, its mellow song is also a favourite. I keep seeing what appears to be a juvenile Blackbird at a place called Watts Meadow in Rochester, Kent. This bird confuses me as it has a broad white band running horizontally across the base of it's body, just above the tail. Is this usual? Also, it looks much larger and more unkempt than the average Blackbird. I have recently moved to Kent from the north of England so the new array of wildlife here is largely a mystery to me.
