White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's

back yard, Stanford campus

This is the Gambel's subspecies, which winters in the inland California, much less common than Puget Sound in the San Francisco Bay Area; this one has the orange-pink rather than the yellow bill, and back feathers with rufous centers and gray edges, rather than the blackish centers and tan/buff edges of the Puget Sound. See http://www.pbase.com/image/75046385 for a more expected yellow-billed Puget Sound bird in the same spot two days earlier.
