Ross's are smaller, have more rounded heads and proportionally smaller bills, and lack the prominent dark "grinning patch" of the Snows; they also generally lack the orange-tinged heads seen on many Snows, including those in this picture, which results from staining by the iron-rich mud into which Snow Geese thrust their heads when feeding.
