Long-billed Dowitcher, spring breeding plumage

Palo Alto Baylands

A dowitcher mostly molted to breeding plumage, with a few winter feathers remaining. Though the bill looks on the short side, the white tipped black feathers forming the bars on the breast and flanks are diagnostic of Long-billed. In addition, the white linings of the scapulars and wing coverts are confined to the bottom of the feathers, giving them a squared-off look, rather than the v-shape found on Short-billed. Another picture of the same bird, with the bill held at a different angle: http://www.pbase.com/image/130559395 .
