June 2006 Daniel Bollag

ShameUponMe!*
by Daniel Bollag

Lyon, France

I was taking more than a dozen pictures of these musicians,
thinking I was using *Tv* (shutter priority).

But the camera was set on *M* (manual)
without me realizing it (would you believe?!).

So the meter measured without adjusting the aperture accordingly,
and all the images became *very* dark and «flat».

That’s why they got so noisy (grainy) in postprocessing.

But there still is, IMHO, something left of the charm of that moment...

Daniel, if you do give Neat Image a try, keep in mind that you can run it on a separate layer above the one with the noise. Then, you can make adjustments to the opacity of that upper layer applying as much or as little of the noise reduction as you like. If you want to keep some of the noise (and I would), just blend the two images in this manner. This is a very nice shot and certainly worth salvaging.

Thank you, Katherine and bottles, for commenting! I do agree with all you say, bottles, and I might want to give «Neat Image» a try. OTOH, I do agree with what Katherine and Barbara (in her remark below your «before» and «after» pictures in «Demo Folder») say: the—unwanted!—noise has some attactiveness too... Please keep your work in the «Demo Folder»; I think it’s interesting for others as well to see. — db.

This is such a cool shot Daniel! Looks like he must have hit a sour note and then hid behind his Tuba! Too bad the camera was set on Manual because it really is a great capture. If you ever decide to give post processing another chance you might try running the image through "Neat Image" (noise reduction program). I gave it a try and it really didn't turn out too bad. It should be even better when you use the full size file of course. Anyway, I put a "Before and After" result in the Demo folder, so check it out. Great entry for this challenge just as it is however; if you fix it, it won't fit the theme anymore :-)

Great capture - I really like this shot! I like the texture from the noise - I'm not sure that I'd like the shot better without the noise.
