'With a Little Help From My Friends'
by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

This is Merve, Merve, Merve, Esra and Erkan, a group of kids who followed us everywhere when I went back to the citadel to take some pictures. (I had met the first Merve on the left two weeks ago.) They are selling jewelry to tourists for YTL 1 (around 80 cents) apiece. I kept putting them off but in the end gave in and bought one from each of them. The second Merve had a little card written out in English about the citadel, which she read to us, quite well, actually. They live in this area, the old, traditional part of Ankara; it's somewhat economically depressed, and I imagine they are forced by their families to sell their wares.

I didn't get the shot I was looking for, but was happy I got this one instead.

Helen, it must be a universal thing; children loving to have their pictures taken. I can't help but wonder if their happy faces are a result, in part, of your photographic interest in them. This a wonderful depiction of the song.---Deb

Beautiful children, Helen. Thanks for another breath of history for me, while taking the time to take beautiful photos to tell about your travels. I'm afraid I couldn't resist the jewelry either. Great shot of them. I wonder...do they grow up as fast in Ankara as, say USA for comparison? They look very happy. Thanks so much!
