Ant-loving Scuttle Fly (Phoridae)

Yasuní National Park, Prov. Orellana, Ecuador

Myrmecophilous phorids are highly specific to the species and "freshness" of their ant hosts. Ant-decapitating flies harass healthy leafcutting ants and Apocephalus paraponerae parasitizes freshly dispatched Paraponera clavata, yet others prefer long-dead ants, like this one attending to a Pachycondyla corpse.
