Bison in the Mist : Yellowstone

Yellowstone NP, Wyoming

On my first morning on a snow mobile (ever!!! It was quite fun), we ran into these two lone Bison far from the heard on the edge of a meadow within Yellowstone National Park. Steam from the various thermal features surrounded us blocking the morning sun over the horizon and I thought, what a nice pano. I would have liked to have used the 50mm, but limited time had me using the 16-35mm.

No but a small contrast/saturation boost. This is close to what it looked like as it was a very bright scene. Using the old Sunny f16 rule would have blown out the shot completely. The exposure was 1/400 second @ f11 ISO 100. That is one stop dimmer than sunny f16 would indicate. I theory, nothing is clipped in this shot but that might depend on specific ICC profiles. I don't do much hi-key stuff and this was a first try for me.

Did you do a levels adjustment in post? If so, I wouldn't have set the highlights to white, but rather left the brightest parts as grey, to emphasize the mist. I don't like the clipped sky on the right. Other than that, I think it's a peaceful photo.

Another scene that you look at and think. WOW that is really pretty. I stopped th sled and started taking the image. The other people were looking at me, "Why is he taking that picture?" I was thinking the same thing wondering if the mist would come out because I have troble with the whole fog thing. It never works for me. Almost.
