Go Vegetarian?

"Can we do this?"

That was the e-mail I received from my husband.
I had to read it twice as my husband is, and always has been a big meat eater.

And this is the rest of the story...
He has a vegetarian friend in Italy who sent him the following:

I have been trying very hard to be vegetarian as I believe in the cause, but I too have been a meat eater all my life,
and it is difficult to change your diet, especially when you love bacon and sausage, but I am definitely eating much less meat than ever before.
I guess that makes me a "flexitarian" (a vegetarian who occasionally eats meat).

I first became concerned a couple years ago when I fell in love with that white cow standing in the bluebonnets.

When I returned home from my photo trip, I went to the market to buy a couple steaks for dinner.
As I stood at the meat counter looking at the package of steak, in my mind, I saw that cow looking at me.
So then I went to get a package of pork chops... we like pork chops... but wait, now I saw a pig looking at me.
That had never happened before. I was shaken and then decided to fix a big salad with lots of veggies for dinner.

We know it is healthier to eat less meat and to eat more fruits, vegetables and grains.
It is also important to be sure to get enough protein in our diet,
and with this in mind, we headed to Whole Foods to see if we could find some meat substitutes
that might help us to achieve our goal and drastically cut down on our meat consumption.

So this is the beginning of a journey... to eat less meat, to eat healthy, and to save the animals!

Would you consider joining us?

Read this book and you too might consider changing your diet...

Fay, I'm a vegetarian and I know that I'm living because of that much healthier then some of the people below,
who swear that they cannot live without eating meat of death animals!
It is good to see that you can buy some alternative protein products in the supermarket

I wouldn't worry about meat substitutes as there's protein in a lot of other foods. Boca Breakfast Links are good though! Are you finding enough recipes that you like? Are you eating dairy?

What else are cows good for? LOL! I don't think I could do it. I'm a major carnivore!

There are millions of sheep and cows in New Zealand... plenty to spare for a roast or steak or two.. sorry I hear you cringe.. But we certainly dont eat meat at every meal, we like to have fish and salads often. Good luck with your diet change.

For me it looks better than it tastes, but can´t deny a strange desire from time to time...and that´s ok for me.

It looks very good, but I will stick to the Bacon and steaks in moderation! V

No thanks to those funky Gardenburgers. I don't like their taste at all!!! YUK!!!
Good luck with your new venture ~ but don't forget to consume all the essential amino acids!

I'm already a vegetarian and have been for more years than I'll admit to.. but I don't need substitute meat flavoured soy products if I don't even like meat... V for your story Fay.

I can't say I have ever thought about giving up meat. I think I would worry about what to replace it with... I'd be interested in seeing how you go about it...
PS Also a lot of our meat is exported - and that has put the price of meat very expensive now.

You bet! I've been a vegetarian since the age of two! The choice of food to eat is vast and varied. Kudos to you. V
