As I beheld her old city face there was yet a spark of youth within her eyes.I felt her skin peeling with countless layers of soiled folds.Their creases often scored like deep dark scars. And from among these injuries of age she glanced in return.Glowing with the charm and mystery of a black pearl.A child growing into tomorrow in spite of it all.

I'm on the edge of the big, bad world, I can still hide behind something and have a little drink...hm, that wall is leading ?? Why I like your images so much Kal is ..its all in the reading, ... our construction of meaning. You have left so much out , yet your images contain the desired information.

I think the title is perfect. Few very childish and so very good definitions of childhood speaking from your image: curiosity and uncertainty. Proportions chosen just exact to compare the huge world with little world around the child.
Well done meaningful and thoughtful work.

My first realisation is she doesn't even know you are there. And the image doesn't show a lot but it shows she hasn't got much. Excellent work :>ote

I'm too tired (and too lazy) to read the comments... I'm only going to tell you I like the DOF and the framing, it works wonderfully to emphazise the expression of the little girl. I love how she's partially hidden. Interesting and beautiful image, Kal.

Ana is right, Kal. Your images of Shanghai must be looked at cumulatively, rather than individually. You have revealed a city in great change, yet still very much reflective of a unique culture. Whether you call yourself a
documentarian or photojournalist, you give us a deeply humane sense of place. This particular image give us a half hidden child, oblivious to your presence and to her own future. Your softly focused worn walls speak of
time and poverty. You make us wonder how she manage her life once she exchanges that bottle for
a work permit.

Through your photos we are seeing a whole different word unfold right in front us... This is worth much more than a simple comment on Pbase...

Parting curtains for a shy glimmer ,as a pearl amid weary wrinkles of a shelled existence.
