Fort Pike - Built in 1819

Long before the invention of the automobile or the airplane, this fort was built to protect New Orleans from foreign invasion by sea.
Openings all around the structure were built for cannons and inside the fort is an entire compound for a military batallion.

A lovely piece of history. The fort is similar to many in Europe. Given the closeness of the surrounding sea, I am surprised it is still there!
