Driving a Routemaster

This photo was taken by Wayne the bus driver who let me sit in the cab. Thank you very much.

I wanted to get some photos of the London Routemaster buses(built in 1965ish) before the last are withdrawn in 2006.

I last drove one of these about fifteen years ago when I borrowed one from St. Albans bus garage to do an evacuation drill at the fire station. We rescued the causalities through the upstairs rear window.

You look very at home, there!!
I used to jump on a routemaster nearly every day when I lived in London - in the summer they were great because if we were lucky enough for the driver to get above 20mph a breeze would rush through the downstairs and cool us down a bit! It was also the ticket collector on the buses that made things feel slightly safer - especially at night. Shame they're going, really!

Chris, you look far too pleased with yourself! I have a similar shot of my nephews on a kiddies fair ground ride when he was very small... ;-)

I'm getting the names 'Flanders & Swann'
I suppose Swann is collecting the fares.

I was really sad to hear that these buses were being retired ... they really are part of the London landscape, aren't they. Wonderful shot Chris!
