Compton Hill Water Tower

St. Louis, Missouri

Built in 1898, it's actually a standpipe designed to help regulate the pressure in the old water system. The level of artistic attention given to mundane items like water towers gives an indication of the level of wealth - and of what people felt were appropriate uses of public money.

"The level of artistic attention given to mundane items like water towers gives an indication of the level of wealth - and of what people felt were appropriate uses of public money." Amen. Things were built to last and were beautiful as well as functional. Now everything's built cheap and obsolete upon completion.

Strong composition, beautiful detail. Sorry about the rant.
