The Photographer

San Diego, CA

September 28: Audra In Black and White

I attended the Northern San Diego Photography Group meeting last night joining about 10-15 other avid photographers.

***Audra*** and I got into a discussion about the possibility of getting a sharpened, high-contrast black and white image right out of the camera. So here it is Audra without any work in Photoshop!

Below is one of the early evening twilight that caught my eye as I went into the meeting, and Audra from a different view.

Canon EOS 20D ,Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
1/60s f/5.6 at 55.0mm iso400 with Flash full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

There's just one thing I don't understand.

I distinctly remember there was a seagull
sitting on her shoulder
at the meeting...

Great black and white. I see you and Dan have the same taste in women!

Well, it's hard not to take a beautiful shot of Audra, but I'll give you credit anyway, for good timing, composition, and framing. Looks good in black and white -- I suspect you'll be doing more "en camera" b&W, no?

Gorgeous black and white portrait Robin!! NO Photoshop?! You need to give lessons! Though I see you have below in the comments! Excellent shot!

Impressive shot of yet, another beautiful lady Robin. Quit the harem you have ;-)

@John Waine -- I don't know if your Canon Rebel will do this, however my technique on the 20D was to use the menu to set black and white and then I boosted (in the menu) settings to be plus 2 on both contrast and sharpness. And I think I set the filter effect at red. And thats it. Exit menu, take the picture. Crop to preference, sharpen a bit, and post.

Firstly, Mr Reid, I think you should know I hate you for your outrageous lifestyle and the fact that you meet all these gorgeous lady PADers - I'm not happy about that!

Secondly, I demand that as a leading practitioner of the dark art, you should now publish your methods that produced this excellent B&W picture.

(Note: this comment may contain irony! LOL)

Spot on, mono will always be in my blood.
I would open my darkroom today if the quack would let me.
BTW Nice looking lass.

Really well done B&W. Nice conversion. Great portrait.

Very Nice! Both images are great, I love the mood of twighlight!
And Robin, this is pretty close to the look I am after, especially considering no "photoshop" work here!
Great Job and thanks for posting this!

Right out of the camera? Wow. The contrast is great and her eyes sparkle.

Very nice portrait..looks almost like an SP
Cindy Flood28-Sep-2005 14:30
You really nailed the focus on the eyes. I never tried that B&W feature right out of the 20D. It looks good. The light in the alternate is great.
Leo Charette28-Sep-2005 14:12
Very nice! Great focus on the eyes and I love the range of toning. Hi Audra!
Gayle P. Clement28-Sep-2005 14:02
You succeeded well here, Robin. My first thought when I saw this photo was the strong and effective contrast.
