April 20: SP (Studio Practice) Wednesday

For those of you who have been following my weird Photoshop shenanigans the past few days, you must know that I’m practicing techniques. The most difficult challenge for me is pulling an image off a complex background.

This is my effort from last night. See original image here with its complex background.

Of course I couldn’t leave well enough alone, and had to add my signature seagull. LOL.

Robin, I just discovered that magic eraser a couple weeks ago. Try that. It works pretty slick. Did you get my contact info ok? Cheers Danny

Robin, not that I'm an expert, but I find the magnetic lasso to be very useful in these situations, with the image blown up quite a bit. Tedious but effective. As for getting loose hair, i sometimes select the image with a bit of the background included around the hair, and then erase the background (with the image blown up) using an eraser with a soft edge, if that makes sense. This image is good, but to my eye the seagull looks lit differently than you do, which is a giveaway that pS was used.

Practice makes master!! I think you did great job with this image. In my photos with some SP what I`ve done is that I use a simple wall with just one color, so that I can use the magic wand in PS to select the color of the wall the Selection inverse and ready to crop. But in this image you have done such a great job because is not easy to pull out of this complex Background.

Great work, the composition turned out well. Creative. Studio? Wow, I thought I was really in to in when the other day I bought a tripod. In fact, Elaine said, "when did you get that? you're really getting into this photography stuff, aren't you!" A studio, now what room could I use for a studio?

@Di... those clip on lights are a joke.. they wouldn't be much help for this kind of shot. Mabye a closeup of a gnat? !!!

Well, I'm impressed with your PS skills. How do I light my studio? Are you kidding me? I didn't even know I was supposed to have a studio! However, after seeing yours, I think I'll steal the boys' clip lights from their rooms and start playing with lighting. This is cool, thanks!

Another good piece of isolation. I am not sure why you are trying to master this but it is fun to see all the results you come up with.

Robin, Don't you just use a polygonal lasso to cut out your subject from the background? It's tedious work, but if you zoom to about 300%, it's extremely effective. This one is well done, but next time, make your hair all sticking out funny and try it! Very difficult to get the stray hairs in your cut-out. Jeremy PS Watch out! That seagull's on a crash course with your head!

Robin - never let a Sea Gull into your studio... They'll create an awful mess on your Hasselblads waist level finder... ;-)

I think this is about as good as I've seen for the technique Robin and a lot better than my efforts. The seagull manipulation is terrific and very realistic. Maybe one day you can post us a primer on this! :o)

Interesting.... Nice PS work.. the lighting on the portrait is interesting with the bright sky background... Gives the effect of the sun shining from camera left....
