March 1: Herding Sheep

Queenstown, NZ

Today’s PaD is dedicated to two English PaDers: John (near York) and Penny (near Oxford). I always admire their great shots of rural England, so I have to reply with this scene of a herd being brought down off the hill by Mossy a border collie.

We were at the Walter Peak Station near Queenstown after taking the nearly century old steamship the TSS Earnslaw across Lake Wakatipu. The demonstration of dog handling and then sheep shearing at the high country farm was quite fascinating.

A special gull shot dedicated to the my great birder friends Herb and Pepe in San Diego can be found in the *** additional NZ gallery*** along with other sheep shots.

I might mention I only had my 70-300 mm lens with me, and I found it to be too much zoom for the tight quarters. Generally I’ve mostly enjoyed my wide angle lens on this trip.

Robin -- missed this one!! Missed quite a few of late as it's kind of hectic on the farm of late :(( BTW we started lambing today (26th March) I guess for the next three weeks I'll see quite enough sheep LOL. Keep up the good work ~~ cheers John

Very nice shot - not too close, it captures the sense of crowding well.

Not a baaaaaad shot (sorry :) about that!)... love the dog in the top corner. He looks very intense, doesn't he?

As a border collie owner, I like this shot -- actually, I like it in any event. I'm kind of suprised to see a border collie, since I though Kiwi's used Aussies (the dogs), just like the Aussies (the people) do.

I'd watch it with those sheep; they look about ready to stampede. I think you'd look funny with cloven hoof marks all over your body. In any event, you probably shouldn't get too friendly with those woolies; people will talk.

Looks like a scene from "The Thorn Birds." Wonderful shot--what are you saying to them that they are looking at you like that.

Actually, I think that one in the second row on the right side of the frame is flirting with you.

Robin, I LOVE this! The only thing that could improve it would be if you and your zelig like face were in there amongst these other great looking guys (and gals).
