It was playing "up periscope" near the river bank
(part of body is visible below water surface).
Perhaps we were sitting on its favorite sunning rock.
We take this as a sign of the health and cleanliness of the river.
Body diameter about 1 1/2 inches, though we've found
snakeskins on the shore (with the same scale pattern)
suggesting a much larger adult size.
Any herpetologists out there - care to make an ID?
