Scientific name: Loriculus galgulus (Linnaeus, 1758). CITES status: CITES II - ENDANGERED.
Distribution: Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Anamba Island, Borneo, Riau Archipelago, Bangka and Belitung Islands, Sumatra, Islands of Nias, Siberut, Sipora.
Small size with short tail (12-14 cm),red-rumped parrot, the only Hanging-Parrot in Borneo and Sumatra. Male is overall green; patch on breast crimson;
Patch on back orange; small patch on crown blue. Female lacks the scarlet throat and yellow on back. Iris - brown; feet - brown or orange; Bill - black.
This tiny parrot frequents the canopy and middle stage of both primary and secondary lowland forest. Travels singly or in pairs with fast whirring wingbeats,
giving shrill calls as they past. Feeds mainly on flowers, buds and small fruits; Clambering about with comical swagger. Is difficult to see due to small
size and green colours. Has the strange habit of hanging upside down to sleep. Females carry nesting materials tucked into their rump feathers.
