Vanda Miss Joaquim has been repeatedly self-pollinated. Some of the seedlings produced exceedingly large flowers. Upon investigation, these plants were shown to contain twice the amount of DNA; they are polyploid plants, the dream of every hybridizer. Tetraploid clones of Vanda Miss Joaquim have all been given varietal names such as Atherton, Douglas, Juliet, Hula Girl and Woodlawn.
Singapore, Malaysian and Hawaiian hybridizers have been extending the family tree of Vanda Miss Joaquim. So far, there are already around 177 second generation, 119 third generation, 43 fourth generation and 13 fifth generation progeny.
