Squirrel Rescue

I was outside doing some yard work on this windy day when a big gust of wind dislodged a squirrel nest in one of my trees and sent it crashing to the ground. I knew there were little squirrels in it because I could hear them crying out after their tumble out of the tree. I looked inside the nest and saw 5 newborn squirrels in it. Mother squirrel had run off, but I knew that squirrels usually have a backup nest so I let it be and retreated to let mother squirrel take care of it. A couple of minutes later mother squirrel returned and one by one carted all her young away to another location. This squirrel is one of my backyard regulars and now whenever she comes around I give her a handful of peanuts to help her out for having lost her nest. Hopefully her young squirrels are alright.

OMG look at how newborn that one is! What a good mother squirrel and you too for giving her some nutrition to care for her babies. Great capture Chris.

Wow, what a story. And what a wonderful photo to accompany it. I sure hope things are OK for these little ones... I expect they will be, especially as mother is getting some good food!
