Racing Pigeon

This morning I woke up to find this pigeon sitting on the railing by my back door. I was a bit stunned when I saw this bird because I very rarely see pigeons here. This pigeon spent the whole day just sitting in my yard, first on the railing by the back door, then on the patio and then on the roof for a couple of hours. All the pigeon did was sit; it did not eat, drink and it barely moved. The pigeon appeared perfectly healthy, though, and it was quite tame.

The pigeon had a band on its leg and from that I was able to find out that it is a racing pigeon registered with the Canadian Racing Pigeon Union. It belongs to a member of the Golden Triangle Loft in the Ottawa Valley. That was all I was able to find out about the pigeon because the details I needed to find the owner were worn off the band.

The pigeon likely lost its way and landed in my yard thoroughly exhausted, which would explain why it just sat around all day. I was advised to catch the pigeon, provide it with food and water for a day or two and release it. Unfortunately, my attempts to catch the pigeon failed and it flew off. I would have caught it if it weren't on my roof, but since I'd rather not fall off my roof and break my neck, I wasn't able to be quick enough.

When the pigeon took off it circled high above three times and then appeared to deliberately head towards the west, hopefully towards home.

It appears that a large wave of migrants moved in last night. Today I saw Black-throated Blue Warbler, Northern Parula, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird in my yard. I didn't have much time to spent out with my camera today, but I did manage to get a few quick shots of some of the birds in my yard (below). I can't believe the hummingbirds are back! It seems unreal after this cool, rainy spring. It also appears that I am going to have chickadees nesting in one of my bird houses this year.
