A Portion Of The Ceiling Of The Sistine Chapel

The Vatican

The ceiling was painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512 starting at the age of 33. In order to reach the Chapel's ceiling,
which was 68 feet above the floor, Michelangelo designed his own scaffold. Contrary to popular belief, he painted not
lying on his back but in a standing position on the scaffold. The work was carried out in extremely uncomfortable
conditions from his having to work with his head tilted upwards.

Absolutely incredible that Michelangelo was able to paint like that standing on a scaffold. Thanks for the history and you gave us a good view of his work...must have been so awesome to stand there in person...beautiful capture, the light and details are excellent...nice to see you Jay...V!

It must have been great tosee this. It is very ornate by modern day standards, but I believe that every part of it is a masterpiece. a great shot too, which gives us an idea of the detail and colour. Very well done.

In response to Char's question, I was not aware of any sign prohibiting photography, and our guide never mentioned a prohibition against photography. Nor did any guard ever say anything to me. My image was taken with a high ISO and no built-in flash, which would have been useless anyway because the height of the ceiling is 68 feet. However, there were many people taking flash pictures with their point and shoots in the huge crowd there! There may have been a rule against photography and/or flash photography in the Sistine Chapel, but it was never brought to my attention.
