Under cover, Singapore, 2007

We dodged rain squalls all day long in Singapore. This street person is dodging them as well, using an underpass to take cover. He smokes a cigarette and reads a newspaper, waiting for the rain to cease. Actually it did stop while we were in this underpass, and a tiny glimpse of sun very briefly warmed the wall at far right. And so a story unfolds, based on the small contrast in color between the de-saturated gray world surrounding the street person, and a warmer, more hopeful place presumably just up that ramp to the outside world. Viewers may well bring differing interpretations to bear on this story, which is why I made and post-processed the image in this way. For example, what role does the newspaper play here? Is he just passing the time, waiting for the rain to end? Or does he really care enough to want to know what is going on in the world, or in his community? The symbolic significance of the concrete block that stands between him and the ramp is also at issue here. Does it symbolize the barriers that keep him in the streets? Or is he willing and able to get up and step around those barriers, seeking a better life, if he wishes? And finally, he is looking down, not up. He does not seem to notice that the rain has stopped and the sun has momentarily, at least, bathed the wall at the end of tunnel with a trace of golden light. It makes us wonder if he, and indeed, other street people, are actually willing and able to get off the street and seek a “better” kind of life?

Thanks, Trica. Those stories lie within each of us, and this image can provide the catalyst that makes us imagine them.

Totally agree, a shot with many stories to share.

Wow, there is lots of symbolism in this image. The block does seem to represent a prohibitive barrier between the man and the ramp leading towards the light--which could represent hope, the future, acceptance, or many other concepts. Phil, did you see all these interpretations when you shot this image? And how do you compose these images without the subject being aware (and self-conscience) of your presence?

Thanks, Ceci, for spinning your tale about this picture. And that is exactly what this image, and all of the images in this gallery, are intended to do -- encourage others to pick up the thread I start and take it wherever they want to take it. Yes, there are many interpretations possible here. That's why I made the picture as I did, and that's why I posted it in this gallery as an example of visual story-telling.

From the way this man is sitting and the odd curve of his back, this could be someone who is a bit crippled, and who has sought shelter under the bridge. I notice that he's wearing a watch, and that he's taken his shoes off, and of course that he's smoking -- so it would appear that he has a little money. He's as absorbed in his paper as is any person, and has fashioned an intimate space for himself out of the rain, where he has both light and some security, with walls and obstacles. I liked your take on this image, as well as the starkness of his surroundings, and that wash of warmth made by the sun. There could be so many interpretations of this scene, and you have offered many choices, as well as a rather private picture.
