In the hutong, Beijing, 2007

Parts of old Beijing are laced with narrow alleyways known as hutongs. This particular hutong was crowded with cyclists and pedestrians at day's end. A child sits amidst them, lost in play. An instant after I made this photograph, his mother darted into the street and pulled him to safety. This street photograph tells the story of a neighborhood, a city, and even a country. The street is the living room, the playground, the roadway, and the lifeline of the community. It is a place where people know each other – some of them have probably seen this child at play here before and assume that his mother will soon be out to get him. That’s probably why nobody even looks at him, except for a brief glance from a boy who has nearly tripped on him. It is just the way Beijing works, and much of China along with it. This may be an urban crowd, but one senses a community within it.

A slice of life. I like that phrase, Carol. That is what stories are made of -- we can represent an entire community by focusing on a small segment such as this that tells the story in a vividly memorable way. You have been to Asia yourself, so you can hear, feel, and smell the scene as well as see it unfold before your eyes. We saw relatively few face masks in Beijing. Maybe I'll see more when I get to Hanoi in December.

This reminds me a lot of the streets of Hanoi. Crowded, people going about their business, children playing, bicycles everywhere, perhaps getting in the way....women cooking on the sidewalks for their families. Your shot has the same feel to it of warmth and acceptance of these hard working people.... they all do it all every single day, in the midst of smoggy, steamy air. I am surprised not to see anyone wearing face masks here.A great slice of real life is portrayed here.

Thanks, Jenene. There is a sense of community expressed here, as chaotic as it may seem. And that is part of the story I tell, not only of this street, but of China.

A wonderful analogy Phil to equate the street to living room and playground. I always sensed a profound sense of community throughout Asia, big city or small.
