Group Five arrives at the Acropolis, Athens, Greece, 2005

Thousands of cruise ship passengers are bussed every day from Athens’ port of Piraeus directly to the Acropolis, where they can view the ruins that have come to represent the political and cultural accomplishments of Greece. Here, Group Five from the Grand Voyager is about to begin its long climb to the top of the historic rocky butte that has towered over the city for 2,500 years. The tour guide is waiting for the word to move out while this cross-section of tourists reflects emotions ranging from indifference to patience to passivity – all human values.

Thanks, Ruthie, for showing how this picture puts tourism into perspective. Your summation was so eloquent, I have moved this image from my Human Values gallery, where it was doing a good job, to this Tourism Gallery, where it will be even more helpful in showing how human values can play an important role in expressing the nature of tourism.

i had to smile when i opened this one, Phil. all my images from the Acropolis in Athens are so similar...groups of herded tourists, looking disenchanted and somewhat bored and impatient. all they want to do is climb to the top to see what they have come to see, they aren't interested in waiting for the stragglers who are too busy buying ice-creams, using the bathroom...etc etc etc...
travel is always thought of as such a fun and relaxing thing to do, but this picture certainly highlights that at times, it can be anything but!!

Thanks, Rudi -- this picture is all about the logistics of travel, the efforts and anxieties involved in getting from one place to another. No, this is not a picture for a travel agency or cruise line. But it is the reality of the moment that speaks here in terms of the human values it expresses.

True, this picture is full of human values: It shows me many reasons, why i do not like organized tours. Being herded about like a flock of sheep, the guide holding up her sign like a traffic-policeman: "Stop! Don't go!" At the same time she looks over her shoulder and her frowning seems to say: "It's always the same! They're late again!" There is a woman in the rear on the left with her mouth open. She seems to agree:"Come on, hurry up!" Somebody always is late in a group. The other passengers express in their facial play how they are facing the facts. Definitely not a picture a travel-agency is interested in for their next catalogue. But it is great; i love it!

Apart from the range of diverse human values, i also see that almost everyone is wearing sunglasses/spectacles except for the man on the right, wearing a blue shirt
