Bean Cutter, Luang Prabang, Laos, 2005

Once again, it was the color of this picture that struck me first. I liked the warmth of the tones of this skirt, as well as the Laotian design of the fabric itself, and built an image out of it by moving in on the hands as they sliced the beans. The skirt not only symbolizes an aspect of Laotian culture – it serves a practical purpose as well. It incongruously catches the trimmings. Other photographers would probably have included the whole person, including her smiling face. I decided to abstract the image, and feature instead the skirt and the incongruous cuttings resting in its folds.

Thanks, Jen, for stressing the color of Lao here. You also see large meaning in small things such as the color of her dress and the nature of her watch -- a blend of past, present, and future. Thanks for this observation.

The color of Lao, and the hands of the working people! This picture works efficiently to introduce the Culture of Lao and its people. And I guess since their lifestyles haven't change much over the years, and this could be how it looked a hundred years ago, but your subtel detail of her fashionable watch reveals the truth. Again, this picture is about Laotian people live in the past also in the present.

Thanks for this comment, Mo. It shows me how much you can appreciate the purpose abstraction to show less and say more. To leave the viewer guessing? Yes. I always enjoy making pictures that ask questions and demand answers.

Not for nothing did you pick this image to represent your gallery - it is by far my favorite because of the level of abstraction, teh use of color and composition, the fact that you leave the viewer guessing...
