Yesterday, Tuesday, a brush fire started in the dry marsh grasses along Buck Pond. By the time it was out this morning (thanks in part to some heavy rainfall this morning and lots of hard work from area fire crews last night) about 100 acres of marsh burned but thankfully no one was hurt and no property other than the marsh was damaged.
Had this happened on Monday it would have been a disaster because it was 80F on Monday with 45 mph winds out of the SW and it could have taken out a few business and several homes on the north side of the pond which borders Lake Ontario. However yesterday the wind was very light and out of the north which blew the fire to the south into the pond and towards the parkway.
While this is a shame, it's not that bad of a thing to have happen to the marsh as it will rejuvenate the marsh when it grows back. I spoke with a couple of New York State forest rangers who were there to assess the damage and try to figure out what happened. They weren't giving out any info on the cause but assured me there is no category for "unexplained". Current conjecture has the cause as a carelessly tossed cigarette from a passing car on Edgemere Dr because that's where the fire started.
