This the Mount Morris Dam in the gorge of the Genesee River. The far side of the gorge is Letchworth State Park. The dam was built in four years from 1948 to 1951 with the last bucket (yes it was done by buckets) of cement poured in 1951. The dam is for flood control only - does not produce any power as the water levels can't be contained high enough to be useful for power. It has never overflowed the top but in 1972 after Hurricane Agnes came storming up the east coast it was about 4 feet from the top saving many a downriver town and village.
A local camera club was holding some activities (which is why I was there) at the visitor's center of the dam and I took in two talks/slideshows and my first ever tour of the dam. You are actually let inside part of the dam and it's literally cool down there as it's about 55F inside and yes there is some "drips" inside.
Sorry no pictures are allowed inside since 9/11/01 because it's a Federal building.
