This is a male Zebra-tailed lizard that we saw on our return visit
to Sabino Canyon, after a 5 week hiatus due to the closure of the
area because of wild fire concern. We have had some good storms in
the area (more that 2 inches of rain at our house just a few miles
east of Sabino) and were amazed to see lower Sabino Creek very dry.
It was a good herp day, having seen this fellow, a horned lizard, a
Clark's spiny lizard, a few Desert spinys, including a male and female
we caught in the act of pre-mating courtship, and a California kingsnake.
The Zebra-tailed above was like a flash of almost day-glo yellow as
he scurried across the desert floor. Fortunately, he stopped for a pose.
This really was a great day for seeing a wide variety of reptiles in Sabino:
