My previous gallery of images from Manzanar can be seen here: https://pbase.com/mityam/manza06 . I wanted to return to Manzanar to keep working on trying to capture the sense of what I felt visiting there. So, on this trip to the eastern part of California, I planned a morning in Manzanar and dragged my friends along. As you may know, I am a retired teacher and for the last few years of teaching I had a classroom tradition as part of our daily class opening of making a paper crane a day. I entered teaching in the spirit of working to make the world better, and, for me, the making of the cranes was a way of reminding myself of that goal. I had over two thousand cranes hung from the ceiling of my classroom by the time I retired. I want someday to make the trip to Hiroshima and leave one thousand of them. But when I saw the cranes at the Manzanar Cemetery during my first visit, I decided to take some of my cranes to leave there as a remembrance. A couple of pictures in this gallery are of the cranes I made. |
